Job Summary

The Caltech Fire Technician assistant will check the fire extinguishers that are distributed throughout the campus buildings, including hallways, laboratories, and mechanical rooms. Under minimal supervision, perform visual check of portable fire extinguisher units from detailed instructions and procedures and track inspections on a campus-issued mobility device. This position will assist in installing, troubleshooting, and testing of the fire alarm systems with a career path directed towards Journeyperson level Fire Alarm Technician.

This is a Campus Critical position. An employee designated as campus critical is expected to be aware of the campus emergency management plan and to report to Campus as soon as possible in the event of an emergency to assist in campus wide response and recovery efforts.

Essential Job Duties

  • Responsible for following all safety procedures and policies and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
  • Assists with monthly inspections of Portable fire extinguishers; inspections entail a visual check of the units; any deficiency will be reported for correction.
  • Maintain working relationship with external service providers to ensure thorough compliance and completion of services provided for Fire Extinguishers
  • Assist in performing planned and corrective maintenance on fire alarm systems, which includes items such as a campus wide monitoring system, building fire control panels, initiating devices such as smoke detectors, pull stations, and flow switches.
  • Assists in supporting the testing of fire suppression systems including wet systems, pre-action, dry chemical, and halon.
  • Assists with testing and operation of building systems including but not limited to battery banks, emergency lighting, exit signage on a monthly basis; inspections entail a visual check of the units, any deficiency will be reported for correction.
  • Maintain accurate and concise records of all fire alarm systems and tests.
  • Assists in responding to trouble calls and fire alarms, during regular shift and off-hours.
  • Assist in scheduling and conducting fire drills and alarm tests.
  • Assist in installing programs and testing new fire protection equipment.
  • Communicate professionally with all members of the Caltech community in all situations.
  • Using Caltech's maintenance management software (AiM) schedule work, account for time, order supplies and record asset history.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with at least 1 year of relevant work experience within fire alarm, fire suppression, and/or emergency equipment inspection.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and follow verbal and written instruction.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a daily basis, bend in all directions, climb stairs and ladders, squeeze with arms and hands, operate machinery using hands, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California driver's license throughout the course of employment.
  • Must be eligible and be able to adhere to the Institute's Motor Vehicle policy.
  • Possess and maintain personnel basic hand tools (Caltech would provide specialty tools, power tools and meters).
  • Ability to learn to use maintenance management software.
  • Ability to learn to use basic functions of Microsoft Products; Word (Document review), Excel (List review), Outlook (E-mail).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Complete an electrical or fire alarm construction and maintenance course (48 units with a two-year certificate of completion or equivalent).
  • Possess and maintain an NICET level 1 certification throughout the course of employment.
  • Previous Fire Safety Technician experience.
  • Higher Education/Campus experience.

Hiring Range

$26.25 - $31.50 Per Hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
